Red Bull Uses Futura
Red Bull launched in 1987 with a visual identity that had to communicate energy in a market category that didn't exist yet. Energy drinks were an unknown proposition to Western consumers, and the brand needed typography that felt industrial and concentrated — like the product itself.
The wordmark is Futura DemiBold, with the R and B specifically redrawn to add a more aggressive edge. The rest of the letterforms are stock Futura.
That decision to modify only two letters reveals a smart design instinct. The R and B open each word — making them slightly sharper gives the logo a proprietary feel without departing from Futura's recognizable geometry.
It's just enough customization to register as "designed" without looking like it's trying too hard.
Why Futura DemiBold Works for Red Bull
Restrained in a loud space. Energy drink branding operates in a visual world of lightning bolts, explosions, and extreme sports photography. Within that noise, Red Bull's typography is surprisingly quiet. Futura DemiBold — not Bold, not Extra Bold — sits at a weight that's assertive without being aggressive. The brand saves aggression for the twin-bulls icon; the type underneath provides a stable, geometric foundation.
Global without cultural baggage. The geometric letterforms translate without anchoring to any region. RED BULL reads the same way whether printed on:

- A cliff-diving poster in Dubrovnik
- A convenience store cooler in Osaka
Engineered for the can. The DemiBold weight has a practical advantage: it maintains legibility on the narrow cylindrical surface of an aluminum can. Heavier weights would fill in at small sizes; lighter weights would disappear against metallic reflections. DemiBold is precisely the weight that survives the can.
