The Foundry was established in London around 1989 by Freda Sack and David Quay, with Mike Daines of Signus. It is widely considered one of the first independent digital type foundries in the United Kingdom.

Freda Sack (1951-2019) co-chaired the International Society of Typographic Designers and received the ISTD Honorary Fellowship. David Quay designed fonts for Letraset, ITC, and Berthold AG. In 2024, The Foundry was revived as The Foundry Types by David Quay and Stuart De Rozario.
